Site Specific Installation | Project Three
Inspiration
My inspiration for this project was originally based by the Presidio building in Naperville, Illinois, from its stair like type of walls on the outside with the balconies, it started off as that and then I was looking more into other types of buildings and found the Jerusalem of Gold Iconic Tower and liked the hexagon shaped and I wanted to use it for this project and kind of like its rectangles from each side that pop off of it, I wanted to make it similar to that but longer and make them as outside areas. |
Planning
This is the first sketch I thought about when I was planning to do this project, and I knew my original plan was to make some type of prism as a tower, but I wasn't sure of which shape to go for. I wanted to check it over with three shapes in order to see which one would look better.
|
After doing the hexagonal prism, I tried the other two sketches of a triangular prism and a square one too. I didn't really want to one with those shapes because it felt more like a go to type of shapes which is why at the end I went with the hexagon and started the measurements.

Process
I first started by cutting the cardboard up into 6 pieces and had some left over. All of them had the width of 2 inches and the height of 16.25 inches. Once picking out the 6 I wanted to use for the main piece of the tower, I used a needle and started making holes onto the the close edge of the rectangles, vertically. I made them evenly close to each other and then place the one I will sew with it, next to it so then I know where to place the holes for the other one. After doing that, I would start sewing the thread through the holes but instead of putting a knot at the beginning, I would use the glue gun to keep it still there in order for it to not move. I would sew all of the row until I got to the end and then would finish it off with a dot of glue again to seal it. |
After finishing the base, I cut the extra pieces that were long like the tower and cut the length into three inches each and then divided the tower into six even spaces and marked it at every 2.75 inches to know where the spiral level goes. Besides from that then I would use the glue gun to glue the edge and knowing that it would be too thick, I would lay the piece the flat and then slowly lift it up to how it's suppose to be, in order to get the glue left on top where it would be covered by something else. |
At the end, I used a transparent piece of material that would look good as a ledge at the end and cut it into a 2 by 0.5 inches each one and glued them at the end and finish the tower off. Using minimum color to it also gave it a more modern sense to it such as the black and brown used to not be as exaggerated but still a place that would be good as a work area to focus or to hang out with people, giving a decision of being inside or outside on the balconies of the either floors. |
Compare & Contrast
Reflection
Overall this project was somewhat enjoyable because of the base of the building because it was sewing it together but I did learn something from it, and it was to always have some type of protection on your finger when trying to sew cardboard together. I learned that after working on it for the second time when I put band-aids on my fingers and realized just how many holes it had at the end that I could've poked myself that many times. Besides from that I did really enjoy sewing but it was just somewhat okay when adding the other parts and putting the ledge at the end of each one and creating a spiral.
ACT Questions
1. Clearly explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
The main base shape of both buildings are hexagons so the main effect to it is the base of the buildings both have.
2. What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The approach was mainly just to be the inspiration of the main source and my own idea of adding this off the main base of it.
3. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
I've realized many of the buildings go for basic shapes like a quadrilateral and sometimes when trying to find something that fits with those can be hard because it's either to go with the basic, or go more shape like with a geometric design but there isn't much of an in between with it.
4. What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea I wanted to get based off the inspiration was to make a place of focus, or relaxing. Sometimes being in a building outside from home or less busy than a cafe or less quiet than a library, you might just need some place that has a lively a presence to be focused.
5. What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
There is usually no in between of combining the normal go to building design, with a more intricate type, but there are several other designs that seem to be getting more interesting that is something I hope to see of more in the future.
